contact the WCRWA at (704) 455-9299 or visit Blame not issue in Earnhardt wreck 3/05/01 By AL JONES The Sun Herald (Biloxi, Miss.) BILOXI, Miss. -- Donnie Allison has seen his share of tragedy on the tracks of NASCAR. He and his brother, Bobby, both ended their careers after wrecks during races. Allison's nephew, Davey, died when his helicopter crashed at Talladega Superspeedway in 1993. And Allison said he feels the pain all NASCAR fans felt when Dale Earnhardt died two weeks ago on the final lap of the Daytona 500. But the wreck should not be blamed on anyone, he said, unless the blame falls on the shoulders of The Intimidator himself. Reports the week after Earnhardt's death said some fans were blaming driver Sterling Martin for causing the wreck that killed Earnhardt. Allison disagreed. "At the World 600 in Charlotte in 1981, I had a bad wreck," Allison remembers. "My question was `What happened?' -- not to point the blame at anyone."With Earnhardt's wreck, they're trying to determine what happened. They're not trying to blame anyone, including Sterling. If people watched the race, they would blame the wreck on Earnhardt because Sterling never moved. It was Earnhardt who came down, not Sterling. That is what happened. We all hate it because Earnhardt was an icon." The former NASCAR driver and 10-time Winston Cup winner is on the Coast at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum to sign autographs during the Boat and RV Show. He took time to talk about Earnhardt's death and his family's tragedy. Allison's career was cut short by a racing accident, as was that of his brother, Bobby. Davey was Bobby's son and appeared to be giving the Allisons a second generation of racing success before that fatal summer day in North Alabama. "We did have very successful careers," said Allison, whose last race was in 1988. "Even Davey's was cut short by an accident. We did have good careers, and racing may have been better when Bobby and I were doing it. Racing is going through a traumatic period with the deaths last year and Earnhardt's this year."Losing Davey was tough on us and losing Dale is tough, too. But somehow, racing will be better."Allison, who owns a ranch near Selma, Ala., said racing families deal with tragedies like fishing families do when they lose a loved one."In Biloxi, if you have a family of fishermen and one of the sons drowns, the rest of the family doesn't quit fishing. You don't quit because someone got killed, you do the best you can to deal with it."Earnhardt was the R-A-C in race," he said. "You never think about (dying), no race driver that is still participating at the full level thinks about it. I've never been scared. If a driver is scared, it's time to put the helmet on the shelf and quit. Donnie into the Stock Car Hall of Fame 2/15/01.
